~The Great Street‑Name Consultation ~ A Two Part Story of Street Naming

It appears the Golden Hay development has reached the “naming ceremony” stage — that magical moment where a field becomes a spreadsheet and a spreadsheet becomes a list of street names that could be anywhere from Milton Keynes to the Moon. Here is the form for voting for more Names and send over to us and we shall submit to the Street Naming Ceremony by the Wild Life Association at

Residents were invited to choose between a selection of perfectly serviceable, entirely unrelated, and deeply uninspired names. So, naturally, we thought we’d help.

After all, if we’re going to lose fields, hedgerows, and the night‑shift bats’ favourite flight corridor, the least we can do is ensure the new streets carry names that reflect the true spirit of the place.

Here are a few suggestions from the community:

  • Goa Way

  • Bats Close

  • Nimby Place

  • Hedgehog Crossing Road (No Speeding, Please)

  • Deerly Beloved Drive

  • Encroachment Crescent

  • Wildlife Were Here First Way

  • Golden Nay Close

  • Badger’s Not Having It Boulevard

  • Nature’s Side‑Eye Street

If nothing else, it proves one thing:

When the countryside speaks, it speaks with humour even when the situation is anything but funny.

🌙 The Tale of the Golden Hay Street Names

A Whimsy‑Section Storybook Entry

Once upon a not‑so‑distant morning, when the mist still curled sleepily around the hedgerows, a curious parchment fluttered into the village. It claimed to be an “Official Street‑Name Consultation,” though it arrived with all the charm of a misplaced shopping list.

The wildlife gathered first, as they always do when something rustles where it shouldn’t.

The bats hung upside‑down from the old oak, squinting at the paper. The hedgehogs shuffled into a prickly semicircle. The deer stepped forward with their usual quiet dignity, ears tilted in mild disbelief.

“Look at these names,” whispered a bat, fanning the page with a wing. “Maple View? Willow Rise? They’ve never even met a willow,” huffed a hedgehog. The deer simply blinked, which in deer‑language means, Really? This again?

So the wildlife decided to help.

If the humans insisted on naming streets where fields once breathed freely, then the names should at least tell the truth — or tell a story — or at the very least, make someone smile.

And so the creatures drafted their own list:

Goa Way — suggested by a hedgehog with a surprisingly sharp sense of humour.

Bats Close — approved unanimously by the night shift.

Nimby Place — the deer insisted this one stay.

Encroachment Crescent — truth in storytelling. Wildlife Were Here First Way — a historical correction.

Golden Nay Close — the horses neighed in agreement. Badger’s Not Having It Boulevard — self‑explanatory. Nature’s Side‑Eye Street — the owls contributed this one.

When the list was complete, the animals placed it gently beside the original consultation form. The wind picked it up, as winds do, and carried it toward the village hall.

And though no one knows exactly where it landed, some say that on quiet evenings, if you listen closely, you can hear the bats giggling, the hedgehogs snuffling with pride, and the deer giving one last, elegant nod.

Because sometimes, even in the face of unwelcome change, a little whimsy can help the truth shine through.
